HOME  >  TOM'S TIPS  > Protect Your Property From Spring Rain Damage

Spring’s arrival often means wet and wild weather, including flood-producing rains which can threaten a building’s structural integrity. Tom recommends preparing your site for the risk of floods:

Construction sites:

Follow the flow. Observe the stormwater’s path on the construction site, from the water’s entry to exit. Remove all materials from the flow path and protect what you can from ponding water.

Be sure trenches are open for drainage.

Existing structures:

Fill any low areas in the yard or next to the foundation with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage.

Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are cleared and free of debris.
